Many of us did not get what we wanted from Santa, but that doesn’t mean we can’t join the annual January craze of New Year’s Resolutions.

Face it, there are legal matters that everyone realizes are important, but since they never seem urgent, they never get done. For this New Year, make it your goal to get the legal aspects in order for yourself and your family. For some of these tasks, it will never seem like the right time to do it . . . you just have to do it anyway. It only takes a minute to call us and setup an appointment, and once you have the appointment you’re much more likely to follow-through!

Protect Your Family with an Estate Plan

No, estate planning is not just for people who are old or just for people who are extremely wealthy. Estate planning is for any person who has other people that depend on them, or for any person who wants to leave a legacy whenever they die. Too many people put this off saying things like, “we’ll do this after we have another child” or “we’ll get this done when we retire.”  But, there will always be another excuse.

At Torres & Haroldson, we have estate planning attorneys who can assist you in creating customized wills, powers of attorney, trusts, and other legal structures that will protect you and your family for decades to come. For those of you who already have an estate plan, it may be time to review it with us.  This is particularly true if you recently experienced changes in your immediate circumstances such as a divorce or birth/death in the immediate family.  This New Year, commit to getting this done for the benefit of those you love most. You can start by calling our office to make an appointment.

Formalize Your Family Law Needs

Another common area of procrastination is within family law. For divorced or separated couples, you may delay working out your custody arrangements or doing your separation agreement. For some married couples who have been struggling and trying to make things work, now might be the time to recognize that the best choice you can make is to divorce. For couples who have long been separated, now could be the time to get the divorce done even if you have both agreed that it’s the right choice. People tend to let these legal issues linger undone for too long, which can be harmful to your interests and to the well-being of your children. This year can be the year of the fresh start for you or your kids. Whatever the issue is, our family law attorneys stand ready to help you resolve it. The first step is to make an appointment—just give us a call.

Protect Your Loved Ones with Proper Insurance Coverage

You get into a car accident, but there is no insurance to get you any monetary recovery.  It’s been a scenario that we’ve seen too often over the last year.  Fortunately, there are things you can do to ensure this doesn’t happen to you when you are involved in an accident.  Personal injury protection (or PIP) insurance is an option that you can purchase when you buy automobile insurance. PIP pays for your medical expenses and your lost wages when you’re in a car accident or wreck.  Importantly, PIP is triggered regardless of who was at fault, and whether you have personal medical insurance or not.  PIP is also fairly inexpensive—it’s a good way to protect you and your loved ones from many of the losses that come with being victims in an accident.  In addition to PIP, uninsured and underinsured (UIM) coverage can also be purchased through your auto insurance to protect you in case the person that hits you doesn’t have insurance or doesn’t have enough insurance.  It’s critical that you purchase UIM coverage when 20% of drivers don’t carry any insurance, and a large majority only carry state mandated minimum limits.
